An enema is the introduction of liquids into the rectum and colon via the anus, mostly done to cleanse the rectum and large intestines. A ‘coffee enema’ is just that just with coffee.
This alternative medicine approach has been a blessing for some and a horror story for others.
MindBodyGreen.com lists 10 reasons why you should try a coffee enema, among them: reduction of toxicity levels by up to 600% and it’s ability to cleanse and heal the colon, improving peristalsis.
However they fail to mention the potential downside. The study “Proctocolitis caused by coffee enemas,” suggests that coffee enema carries considerable risk of provoking unwanted complications and should be reconsidered as an alternative treatment, citing that there have been cases of ‘Proctocolitis’ (inflammation of the rectum and colon) caused by coffee enemas.
And it goes without saying that one should never administer a HOT coffee enema to ones self.
Some advocates of alternative medicine have claimed that coffee enemas have an anti-cancer effect by “detoxifying” the body through the removal of accumulated waste from the colon. They claim that a body with an “clean” colon has the ability to recognize and demolish cancer cells. Practitioners claim coffee enemas can stimulate the liver and gallbladder into releasing toxins and flushing them from the body, allowing the body’s immune system to battle malignant cells.
However there is no medical scientific evidence to support any anti-cancer effect of coffee enemas. According to Cancer.org, “available scientific evidence does not support claims that colon therapy is effective in treating cancer or any other disease. Rare cases of infection and death have been reported.”
Coffee enemas have even made Wikipedia’s list of ‘Ineffective Cancer Treatments‘.
Medical reasons aside, some people do coffee enemas because it gives them a “sense of euphoria.”
Trina and Mike of St. Petersburg, Florida both claim to be addicted to coffee enemas. The couple refuses to drink coffee, which they say is bad for their health. Instead, they use it as an enema.
According to ABCNews, the couple admits they perform caffeinated enemas at least four times a day, at least 100 coffee enemas a month. Once, Trina said she did “nine or 10” in a 24-hour period. This addiction has drastically affected their lives in that they are so addicted, they won’t travel or leave the house for long periods of time. Fortunate for the taxpayer, they both work from home.
“I love the way it makes me feel,” said Trina. “It gives me a sense of euphoria.”
Mike’s mother Jan is concerned about their habit, which she says is “kind of gross.”
Listen to your mother Mike, listen to your mother.
